Uecker-like

First of all, I'm dyin' here. 13 innings so far in this tiebreaker game.

But also, the new Rockies reliever just nearly threw it over the catcher's head, and the announcer calmly said "He does have some control issues."

Also, in the time I was typing that, I guess he decided he'd better groove one, and Hairston put it where it belonged, namely over the fence. 8-6 Padres. On to Philly? I hope so. Jorge Julio, you are my new Jero.

Edit: Nope. The best closer ever in baseball managed to blow it without getting a single out, except the last one which still scored the winning run. For the fucking ROCKIES.

Back, Sorta

Back to San Diego, anyway. It's been a bad sports day here, with the Chargers losing again and the Padres, who only needed to win or have Colorado lose to get into the playoffs, managing to lose while the Rockies won.

Perhaps it was punishment for this sad performance that made Southwest Airlines decide to punish those flying from Las Vegas to San Diego. No *other* flights were leaving late, and there were plenty of other planes apparently just waiting around, but no, we had to wait.

Not to make this into a giant flying misery story, because honestly the delay was not THAT bad, and it was a nice quick and easy flight back to SD. And anyway there's no shortage of those kinds of stories on the web. Probably just within the past week.

But I did want to note the reason we were given for the delay - "There's just too many flights and not enough gates." This leads me to believe that Southwest's managers and planners don't know how many gates there are. You'd think at some point they'd send somebody out to count them or something.

Anyway. Another damned early meeting tomorrow, followed by what will hopefully be a stress-free experience getting home on the train.

P.S: Vegas was fun! Woo!

Five Hundred

TREVOR TIME

(That picture was taken at #479, when he took the all-time lead. But y'know what? 500 ain't too friggin' shabby. Not at ALL.)

Anyway. 500 saves. I'm also hoping he'll get another World Series ring this year. And maybe, hey, a save or two? That would be awesome.

Well Looky There

Check out my Padres, whoopin' some ass on the supposedly invincible Milwaukee Brewers. I know they've been slumping but they're good and yet we whooped some ass.

It's usually not so easy being a Padres fan, man. It's almost alwyays a friggin' heart attack on a plate, everything is a nail-biter, it's just never ever going to be easy. So I love seeing my Padres make it look as easy as this to kick the hell out of a division leader, sweep them without even breaking a sweat. Even without Brian Giles. Even without Trevor.

LET'S GO PADRES

Golly gee, I do love baseball.

I don't expect anyone else to share my love for this game, but I sure do enjoy it. I especially love getting to see it live.

We had to leave early, though it scraped down the spine of my soul to do so. I've only ever left early in one game, which was the second game of a doubleheader between the Dodgers and the god-help-us Montreal Expos, and it was lightly drizzling... and we left in the fifth inning of the second game. Mind you, this was the second game, we'd already watched the entire first game.

It says something that I remember that, because it really should have been entirely forgettable. I *despise* being the guy who leaves early. But it was already past the bunny's bedtime, and he was deteriorating fast (having refused to nap earlier in the day) and he has this nasty dry hacking cough. So we left. Possibly we should not have brought a 3-year-old to the stadium.

Also. I cannot ever, in my life, be a fan of the Dodgers. But I salute and continue to respect the Dodgers for, in the capitol of marketing and image, remaining "Dodger Stadium" instead of "[Name of Corporation] Stadium/Park/Field."

And their salute to Jackie Robinson was pretty cool - even Hank Aaron was there. We saw him. He will always have the HR record in my eyes.

Baseball Poll!

I present to you my utterly unbiased baseball poll. Well, except where I call the Anaheim Angels the Anaheims. I admit my bias there crept in a bit. Otherwise, though, this is entirely dispassionate. Yes.
